Jan was born on December 9th, 1943 in Ceres and his baptism took place on March 3rd, 1944 in NG Kerk Argief, Ceres conducted by Reverend GJ van Zyl.1   Jan's father is Hendrik Johannes Winterbach and his mother is Elena Alberta Olivier.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Petrus Winterbach and Gertruida Magdalena Susanna van der Merwe. He has a brother and three sisters, named Heinrich, Francina, Margaretha and Elna.  He is the third oldest of the five children.
