Hugh was born in 1857 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  Hugh's father is Richard Lythgoe and his mother is Margaret "Mae" Sharkey.  His paternal grandparents are Joesph Lythgoe and Hannah; his maternal grandparents are Hugh Sharkey and Mary May Devlin. He had four brothers and a sister, named Charles, John Joseph, Thomas, Richard and Hannah.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 84 in 1941 in Indiana.
