Richard was born in 1861 in Thornhill Lees, Yorkshire, England.  Richard's father is Richard Lythgoe and his mother is Margaret "Mae" Sharkey.  His paternal grandparents are Joesph Lythgoe and Hannah; his maternal grandparents are Hugh Sharkey and Mary May Devlin. He had four brothers and a sister, named Charles, John Joseph, Hugh, Thomas and Hannah.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 34 in 1895 in St. Thomas, British West Indies.
