Herbert was born on April 20th, 1913 in Basford, Nottinghamshire. Herbert's father was John Henry COOK(E) and his mother was Sarah Ann JAYES. His paternal grandparents were William COOK(E) and Elizabeth ROBINSON; his maternal grandparents were George JAYES and Sarah Elizabeth HALLAS. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Oscar, Charles, Walter, Edith and Mary. He had two half-brothers named Sydney and Ronald. He died at the age of 95 on November 10th, 2008 in Buxton, Derbyshire.
