William was born on October 31st, 1750.  William's father was William Hales and his mother was Mary (Hales).  His paternal grandparents were John Hales and Mary Evans. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Philip, Robert, Peter, Walter, Mary, Martha and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
