Philip was born on October 8th, 1755.  Philip's father was William Hales and his mother was Mary (Hales).  His paternal grandparents were John Hales and Mary Evans. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, Robert, Peter, Walter, Mary, Martha and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
