Adolf was born about 1160 in Dassel, Hannover, Prussia.1   Adolf's father was Count Ludolf of Dassel and his mother was Countess.  His paternal grandparents were Count Reinald of Dassel and Countess Mathilde of Schauenburg. He had a brother and two sisters, named Ludolf, Countess of Dassel and Sofie.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
