Ludolf was born about 1128 in Dassel, Hannover, Prussia.1   Ludolf's father was Count Reinald of Dassel and his mother was Countess Mathilde of Schauenburg.  His paternal grandparents were Dietrich von Dassel and Kunihild. He had a brother and a sister, named Reinald and Gepa.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died in 1167.1
