Elizabeth was born on July 5th, 1800 in Galston, Ayr, Scotland. Elizabeth's father was Robert Scoular and her mother was Annabella Lauchlan. Her paternal grandparents were John Scoular and Janet Hamilton. She had three brothers and a sister, named Gavin, Robert, Matthew and Agnes. She is the third oldest of the five children.
