Lothair Frankish and German emperors. Lothair I, 795-855,emperor of theWest (840-55), was the son and successor of LOUISI, with whom he wascoemperor after 817. A grandson ofCHARLEMAGNE, he was in almost constantterritorial wars with hisfather and his three brothers, Pepin, CHARLES II(Charles theBald), and LOUIS THE GERMAN. Eventually, the Treaty ofVerdun(843) subdivided Charlemagne's empire among the brothers.LothairII, also called Lothair III, 1075-1137, Holy Romanemperor (1133-37) andGerman king (1125-37), was the firstelected monarch.
