(Fulk) "the Black" Comte d' Anjou, known as Le Noir (the Black), was born about 0972 in Anjou, France.1 Le Noir (the Black)'s father was Ct. 'Grisegonnelle' Comte d' Anjou (Grisegonnelle (grey mantle)) Geoffroy I and his mother was Adelais (Adelaide) of Vermandois. His paternal grandparents were Ct. "the Good", Count of Anjou (Le Bon) Fulk II and Gerberga de Gatinais; his maternal grandparents were Ct. Robert I Count of Meaux & Troyes and Adelaide of Burgundy. He had three sisters named Ermengarde, of Anjou and Adelaide d'. He had two half-sisters named Mathilde of Chalons and Elisabeth of Chalons. He died on May 22nd, 1040 in Metz, Moselle, Lorraine, France. He was buried on June 21st, 1040 in Metz, Haute-Lorraine, France.2 1 General Notes

FULK, NERRA (c. 970-1040), count of Anjou, eldest son of CountGeoffrey I, Grisegonelle ("Grey Tunic"), and Adela of Vermandois, wasborn about 970 and succeeded his father in the countship of Anjou on July21, 987. He was successful in repelling the attacks of the count ofRennes and laying the foundations of the conquest of Touraine. In thisconnection he build a great number of strong castles, which has led inmodern times to his being called "the great builder." He also foundedseveral religious houses, among them the abbeys of Beaulieu, near Loches(c. 1007), of St. Nicholas at Angers (1020) and of Ronceray at Angers(1028), and, in order to expiate his crimes of violence, made threepilgrimages to the Holy Land (in 1002-03, c. 1008, and in 1039).
On his return from the third of these journeys Fulk died at Metz inLorraine on June 21, 1040. By his first marriage, with Elizabeth,daughter of Bouchard le Venerable, count of Vendome, he had a daughter,Adela, who married Boon of Nevers and transmitted to her children thecountship of Vendome. Elizabeth having died in 1000, Fulk marriedHildegarde of Lorraine, by whom he had a son, Geoffrey Martel and adaughter, Ermengarde, who married Geoffrey, count of Gatinais, was thethe mother of Geoffrey le Barbu ("the Bearded") and of Fulk le Rechin.
