Francis was a Revolutionary War veteran. He served nine tours of threemonths each. Four of t hese were as a paid substitute, the remainderwere drafts or calls to duty. His war record i s W163. In 1813, stilla patriot, he was serving as Captain in and providing grounds and buildings as the Battalion Muster Head Quarters for the Tennessee StateMilitia for his district . He was living in Sullivan County Tennesseeat the time.
The following appeared in the Tennessee Whig of 12 March 1840:"Departed this life, after a l ong and painful illness, at hisresidence in Sullivcan County, on Friday 21st ult. Captai n FrancisHawley, a soldier of the Revolution. Captain Hawley was born inStafford County, Vi rginia, and came to this county in 1806. He was agood citizen, a kind neighbor, an affection ate husband and father,and in the fullest sense of the term, an honest man."
