Eleanor was born about 1250.  Eleanor's father was John de Balliol and her mother was Devorguilla MacDonald de Galloway.  Her paternal grandparents were Hugh de Balliol and Cecilia de Fontaines; her maternal grandparents were Alan MacDonald de Galloway and Margaret Dunkeld of Huntingdon. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Alan, Roger FitzJohn de Balliol, William, John Balliol of, Cecily, Euphemia and Ada.

‌Eleanor and John the Black were married in a religious ceremony.  They had a son named John the Red.
