John R. was born in May 1863 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. John R.'s father was John Vineyard and his mother was Sarah Jane Shaver. His paternal grandfather was Pressley Vineyard; his maternal grandparents were John David Shaver and Mary Parsons. He has five brothers and four sisters, named John W. Bennett, Andrew Jackson, Henry M., James P., Lewis, Mary E., Sophena, Martha and Sarah E.. He is the fourth youngest of the ten children.-
