Thorfinn II the Black was born in Orkney Islands, Scotland.  Thorfinn II the Black's father was Sigurd II the Stout Hlodvirsson of Orkney and his mother was Anleta MacKenneth of Scotland.  His paternal grandparents were Hlodver Lodar Thorfinnson of Orkney and Audna Kjarvalssdatter MacDunghal of Ireland; his maternal grandparents were Malcolm (Mael-Colium) II of Scotland and Aelgifu Irishwoman from Ossory. He had a brother named Reginald Wiffin Brusse. He had three half-brothers named Sumarlidi, Einar Wry-Mouth and Whelp (Hound).  He died in Battle at Christ's Kirk, Birdsey, Scotland.
