Thorstein the Red was born about 0868 in Dublin, Ireland. Thorstein the Red's father was Olaf Injaldsson Hvite the White of Dublin and his mother was Aud Kjetilsdatter. His paternal grandfather was Ingjald Helgasson; his maternal grandparents were Ketel Flatnefur Bjornsson of Hebrides and Yngvild Kjetilsdatter. He was an only child.
