John Hamilton was born on August 25th, 1851 in Tazewell County, Illinois. John Hamilton's father was Christopher Shaffer and his mother was Elizabeth C. Cox. His paternal grandparents were Christopher Shaffer and Mary Fisher; his maternal grandparents were Emmer C. Cox and Elizabeth Huff. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Lewis Madden, William M., Phoebe, Levina, Elizabeth Ann and Sarah Jane. He was the youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named Orlando.
