His paternal grandparents were Johan Philip Knappenberger and Maria Barbara Stettler; his maternal grandparents were Heinrich Wendling and Catherine Heimbach. He had six brothers and a sister, named William Wendling, Harrison, Benjamin K., Joseph K., Joshua, George W. and Susan. He died at the age of 82 in 1928 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania.-
