John Owen was born on March 27th, 1822 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina.1 John Owen's father was John Henry Tutor and his mother was Martha Patsy Betts. His paternal grandparents were William Owen Tutor and Lucinda Senter; his maternal grandparents are William Betts and Lucy Savage. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Allen Henderson, James Hendon, Henwell L., Hartwell Betts, William Henry, Temperance, Mary Ann and Martha Ann.
