John Shorter 
John was born on July 23rd, 1782 in Charlotte Co., Virginia.1 John's father was James Archibald Shorter and his mother is Lucy Childrey. His paternal grandfather was John, Jr. Shorter and his paternal grandmother is Kindness Unknown. He had four brothers and a sister, named Robert, Benjamin, James, Jeremiah and Kindness. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 74 in 1856.1 General Notes

John and Nancy were married in a religious ceremony on December 9th, 1806.1 They had seven sons and two daughters, named Francis, William, Booker Randolph, James, Woodson Arthur, George Washington, Thomas H., Sarah and Frances.
