Lithgow was born about 1831 in Sewickley Twp., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.1 Lithgow's father was John Means and his mother was Susannah Whitesell. His paternal grandparents were Adam Means and Margaret Hutchinson; his maternal grandparents are Jacob Weitzel and Catherine Markley. He had five brothers and a sister, named Samuel Wiley, Courtney W., Jacob Whitesell, Joseph Markle, John Whitesell and Susan. He is the second youngest of the seven children.General Notes
