Rachel was born about 1719 in ,Amherst, Va.1 Rachel's father was John Higginbotham and her mother was Frances Riley. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Higginbotham and Ann Rawlins. She had seven brothers and a sister, named Moses C, Aaron, John, Benjamin, James, Joseph, Thomas Jefferson and Ann. She was the third oldest of the nine children.
