His paternal grandparents were Johnson Basham and Susan A. Unknown. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William Palestine (Bill), Henry Lansford, Edward Franklin (Edd), Sam Estes, Phinis Malcome, Susan Elizabeth (Betty), Arrie Ellen, Ethel Erie and Cora 'May' Seeley.
