His paternal grandparents were Francis Marion (Frank) Bassham and Louisa Lucretia (Lucy) Popnoe. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Floy, Joseph Carl, Westel 'Lanier', Pauline Loye, Roy Elmo, William Lansford (Bill), Charles 'Neal', Lannie 'Helen', Frances, Mary Lucille and Living.
