Jasper Newton Basham 
Jasper Newton was born on September 1st, 1888 in Santa Fe, Santa Fe Co., New Mexico.1 Jasper Newton's father was James William Ellen Basham and his mother was Annie Pauline (Anna) Terry. His paternal grandparents were James Hogan Basham and Lucillian 'Lucsey' Unknown; his maternal grandparents are Jasper Terry and Mary James. He had a brother and three sisters, named Terry Teel, Lola Ellen, Irene Pauline and Mary Agnes (Mae). He had three half-sisters named Iree Pauline, Mary Agnes and Terry Teal. He died about December 1966 in Weippe, Clearwater Co., Idaho.1 General Notes

Jasper (Jas) Newton Basham had itchy feet and left home when he w
as 17 ye ars old and travelled the country. When he returned to Barsto
w, Tex as he met Hazel Doss who had been going with his younger brother Te
rry. T erry left to go to the ranch in Carlsbad, New Mexico so Jasper sta
rted see ing Hazel and picking her up after church and taking her to vis
it his moth er. They were married on Hazel's 20th birthday.
Jasper drove a water truck. The water around Barstow was full of al
ka li and so people had to have their water hauled in to use. The wat
er w as then sold to people at $1.50 a barrel. Jasper did all kinds of fa
rm a nd ranch work but most of the time as a supervisor. The family follo
wed t he harvest work. When the work was done they moved on to the next h
arves t. When there was no farm work to be done, he did ranch work (break
ing ho rses, etc.). By 1920 they had moved on to the Imperial Valley ne
ar Holtsv ille where their second son, James Edward Basham, was bor
n. In 1922 th ey arrived in Yuba City, California where the last three ch
ildren were bor n.
Jasper was a person who liked to wander. One day after work he just pi
ck ed up and left and was never seen again. James Edward Basham was ar
ou nd 11 years old at that time. From correspondence with Sue (Basham) D
