His paternal grandparents were Obediah Basham and Celia Dowell; his maternal grandparents are Reubin Turner and Elizabeth Likens. He had nine brothers and seven sisters, named James Herrod, James Herod, Obadiah, Elijah, Benajah Anderson, Allen, George, Elijah, Obediah, Margaret, Barbara E., Polly, Margaret, Rachel, Savanna and Mary Polly. He had eight half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Hiram Simmons, Napolean B., Napoleon B, Carroll C, Elihu, Samuel Wesley, Selina Candace, Elihu, Lucinda, Loretta, Nancy, Nancy, Margaret and Salina Candace.
