His paternal grandparents were John Buckles and Frances Wallingford; his maternal grandfather is John Greenawalt Sr. and his maternal grandmother was Rachel Logsdon. He had four brothers and six sisters, named James, William Henry, Isaac, William, Eliza, Rachel, Millie E., Malinda, Mary Jane and Phebe. He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.
