Thomas PLANTAGANET OF WOODSTOCK 
Thomas was born on January 7th, 1355 in Woodstock, Oxforshire, England.1 Thomas' father was Edward III PLANTAGENET and his mother was Philippa OF HAINAULT. His paternal grandparents were Edward Of Carnarvon, For His Birthplace In Wales UNKNOWN and Isabella OF FRANCE; his maternal grandparents were William, Wilhelm III Count Of Hainaut And Holland UNKNOWN and Jeanne DE VALOIS. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Edward “The Black Prince”, William, Lionel, John, Edmund, William, Isabella, Joanna, Blanche, Mary and Margaret. He was the youngest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 42 on September 9th, 1397 in Calais, Pas-DE-Calais, France.1 General Notes

Calais (France) The last part of the French soild to remai
n in English hands. It was captured by EDWARD III after a y
ear's siege (1347). When the burghers came to surrender th
e town, Edward's wife Philippa successfully pleaded for the
ir lives, a scene often reproduced in paintings and sculptu
re. RICHARD II married Isabella of France at St. Nicholas'
s Church, I 1396. present at the wedding was his uncle, Th
omas, duke of Gloucester, who opposed the match and dislike
d the king. Thomas was later arrested at Pleshey in Esse
x and escorted back to Calais where he was imprisoned and f
ound smothered the next day (1397). Calais remained in Eng
lish hands, though it needed constant protection from the F
rench. HENRY VIII landed here for his campaign on 1513 an
d it was near Calais that Henry had his summit meeting wit
h Francois ( of France at the Field of the Cloth of Gold (1
520). It was finally taken by the French in 1558 and its l
oss was a sad blow to the last days of MARY I who claimed t
hat when she was dead, "Calais will be found written on m
y heart."
Gloucester, Thomas of Woodstock, duke of, 1355-97, Englis
h nobleman; youngest son of Edward III. He was betrothed (1
374) to Eleanor, heiress of Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Here
ford, and became earl of Buckingham at the coronation of Ri
chard II (1377). He was the king's lieutenant in France (13
80), but returned to England after the failure of his sieg
e of Nantes. In 1385 he was created duke of Gloucester an
d soon emerged as the head of the baronial party, which i
n 1386 forced Richard to dismiss Michael de la Pole, 1st ea
rl of Suffolk (see under Pole, family), as chancellor. In 1
388, Gloucester was one of the five "lords appellant who se
cured conviction of the king's counselors for treason in th
e Merciless Parliament. When Richard regained power in 1389
, Gloucester made his peace with him and accompanied the ki
ng to Ireland in 1394. In 1397, Gloucester was suddenly arr
ested and imprisoned at Calais. He was probably murdered th
ere a few days before he was "appealed and condemned for tr
eason by the same procedure as that used in 1388.
