Thomas FITZALAN 
Thomas was born in 1353. Thomas' father was Richard "Copped Hat" FITZALAN and his mother was Eleanor PLANTAGENET. His paternal grandparents were Edmund FITZALAN and Alice DE WARREN; his maternal grandparents were Henry PLANTAGENET and Maud DE CHAWORTH. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard, John, John Fitz, Joan, Alice Fitz and Alice. He had three half-brothers named Edmund (Sir) Fitz, Henry* Lord and Henry.General Notes

English statesman and archbishop of Canterbury who aided th
e opponents of King Richard II; during the reign of King He
nry IV, Arundel vigorously suppressed the Lollards. His fat
her was Richard Fitzalan, 10th earl of Arundel, and his mot
her was a member of the powerful House of Lancaster. He bec
ame bishop of Ely in 1374, and during the early years of th
e reign of Richard II he sided with the nobles opposed to t
he King. This party forced Richard to make Arundel chancell
or of England (1386) and archbishop of York (1388) until, i
n 1389, he was able to throw off control by the nobles an
d remove Arundel from office. After making peace with his o
pponents, Richard reappointed Arundel to the chancellorshi
p in 1391, but Arundel resigned in 1396 to become archbisho
p of Canterbury. In the following year the King again depri
ved Arundel of his see and banished him from the kingdom. A
rundel joined Henry of Bolingbroke in exile and returned t
o England in 1399 when Bolingbroke invaded the country, def
eated Richard, and ascended the throne as Henry IV.
Resuming his duties at Canterbury, Arundel initiated agains
t the Lollards (followers of John Wycliffe) a campaign tha
t resulted in the burning of several of them; in 1413 he le
d proceedings against the Lollard leader Sir John Oldcastle
, who was condemned to death. In addition, Arundel served a
s Henry's chancellor from 1407 to 1409 and in 1412-13.
