His paternal grandparents were Louis I 'the Fair, the Pious' King of France, Holy Roman Emp and Judith of Bavaria; his maternal grandparents were Eudes (Odo) Count of Orleans and Engeltrude of Paris. He had three sisters named Rothilde Princess of France, Judith Princess of France and Hersent Princess of France. He was the second youngest of the four children.
