His paternal grandparents were Henry of Scotland and Ada De Warenne; his maternal grandparents were Hugh de Keveliock and Bertrade (Beatrix) Evreux de Montfort. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert De, Henry De, Margaret of, Isabelle, Matilda and Ada. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
