His paternal grandparents were Hugh De Baliol and Cecily De La Fontaine; his maternal grandparents were Alan McDonald De Galloway and Margaret of Huntington. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Hugh De, John, Alan De, William De, Cecilia De, Eleanor De, Mary De, Ada De, UNKNOWN and Margaret De. He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
