James Richard was born on September 13th, 1841 in Bertie Co., NC.1 James Richard's father was Noah Elmo Conner and his mother was Harriet Castellaw. His maternal grandparents were William Castellaw and Sarah Mitchell. He had three sisters named Sabrina, Harriet and Mary Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the four children. Conner, James Richard, Corporal: Born and resided in Bertie County.
Previously served as a Private in Company L (the "Bertie Volunteers"),
First Regiment North Carolina Infantry (6 months service) and in Company
F, Eleventh Regiment North Carolina Troops (Confederate). Enlisted in
this company on October 23, 1863, at Washington, NC. Mustered in as a
Private and promoted to Corporal on February 1, 1864. Present or
accounted for until mustered out on June 27, 1865, at New Bern, NC.
