Joseph H. was born on April 2nd, 1865 in Monroe County, Indiana. Joseph H.'s father was William Henry Harrison Shields and his mother was Mary Ellen Hudlin. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named David Thomas, William Taylor, John Wesley, George E., Mary Elizabeth, Martha Jane, Sarah Angelina, Lucy A., Julia C., Laura A. and Belle Marie. He was the second youngest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 65 on January 17th, 1931 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was buried in Polk Twp.
