Rutha's father was Benjamin "Greenberry" Chapman and her mother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Conner. Her paternal grandparents were John Chapman and Millie Abbott; her maternal grandparents were William Conner and Susannah Kendall. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Willis, John Milton, Martha and Sophia. She had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles, George Washington, James T., John, Warren and Millie.-
