James was born on January 19th, 1730 in Balewirie,Markinch,Fifeshire,Scotland. James' father was George Crichton and his mother was Janet Campbell. His paternal grandparents were David Crichton and Anna Forbes; his maternal grandparents were Archibald Campbell and Issobell Pitcairn. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, George and Helen. He was the second oldest of the four children.General Notes
