Martha was born in 1734 in Of, Halifax, NC. Martha's father was William Whitehead Jr. and her mother was Abby. Her paternal grandparents were William Whitehead and Rachel Lewis McKinnie. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Arthur, Lewis, Cullen, Jacob, Rachel, Rebecca, Sarah, Temperance and Priscilla.
