Napoleon Benjamin was born in 1887 in Virginia.  Napoleon Benjamin's father was Samuel Augustus Shipley and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Gilley.  His paternal grandparents were John Childers Shipley and Nancy Martitia Green. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Loyd Cleveland, Ballard Henry, John Childers, Garland David, Orena Bell and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 4 in 1891.
