John Childers was born in 1835 in Tennessee. John Childers' father was Caleb Shipley and his mother was Elizabeth Galloway. His paternal grandparents were Eli Shipley and Elizabeth Kingston. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Marshall, Washington, James H., Wesley P., Elkanah, Edna, Annie, Amanda Elizabeth and Susan Louisa.
