Sarah was born on November 2nd, 1791 in , Henry, Virginia. Sarah's father was Reuben Nance and her mother was Nancy Brown. Her paternal grandparents were William Nance and Ann Eppes. She had seven brothers and a sister, named Clement, Joseph, Stephen, Payton Skipper, Edmund, Lessonby, Reuben Saunders and Nancy. She was the third oldest of the nine children.-
