William Lane was born on June 28th, 1845 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. William Lane's father was William Hunt Moody and his mother was Mary Edna Childress. His paternal grandparents were George Moody and Hannah Pope; his maternal grandfather was William Burton Childress. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Adam L., James C., John A., Martha Edna, Frances E., Mary Jane and Hannah Ellen. He was the second youngest of the eight children.
