James Galbraith was born in 1830 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. James Galbraith's father was Stockley Donaldson Mitchell and his mother was Alice Gale Rogers. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mitchell and Elizabeth Saunders; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Rogers and Mary Amis. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard Pinckney, Clinton A., Stokely Donaldson, Hugh W., Martha, Alice and Amelia. He was the second oldest of the eight children.-
