His paternal grandparents were William Goff and Mary Oliver; his maternal grandparents were William Haltom and Elizabeth Sugg. He had a brother and a sister, named Isaac G. and Lucinda. He was the youngest of the three children. He had five half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Hugh, William, John R., James, Silas A., Polly Ann, Elizabeth, Louise, Emily and Matilda.-
