Emily was born about 1847 in , Owen, Indiana. Emily's father was Josephus Goff and her mother was Anne Clark. Her paternal grandparents were William Goff and Mary Oliver; her maternal grandparents were Nathaniel Clark and Hannah Rock. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, William, John R., James, Silas A., Polly Ann, Elizabeth, Louise and Matilda. She was the fourth youngest of the ten children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Isaac G., Joseph B. and Lucinda.-
