David James was born in 1828 in , , Virginia. David James' father was David Denton and his mother was Catherine Blessing. His paternal grandparents were James Denton and Deborah Gerow; his maternal grandparents were Jacob Blessing and Elizabeth Messersmith. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Jacob A., Robert, Susan, Deborah and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the six children.-
