Robert was born about 1718 in , Surry, VA. Robert's father was John Coker and his mother was Priscilla Geddings. His paternal grandparents were William Coker and Mary Cartwright. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, James, John, Joseph, Caleb, Bryan, Mary, Honor and Priscilla. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
