James was born about 1714 in , James City, VA. James' father was John Coker and his mother was Priscilla Geddings. His paternal grandparents were William Coker and Mary Cartwright. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Joseph, Robert, Caleb, Bryan, Mary, Honor and Priscilla. He was the second oldest of the ten children. He died in , Greensville, VA.-
