Margaret was born in 1804 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Margaret's father was John Christian and her mother was Nancy Skelton. Her paternal grandparents were Lewis Christian and Margaret Felkner; her maternal grandfather was William Skelton. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named William Lewis, Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, John, Seth, Allen D., James, George, Ruth and Nancy. She was the second oldest of the eleven children.-
