John H. was born in 1866 in , , Virginia. John H.'s father was N. Jefferson Chaney and his mother was Malinda Jane Bondurant. His maternal grandparents were John William Bondurant and Esther Flannigan. He had a brother and a sister, named Lafayette and Effie. He was the oldest of the three children.
