Sarah was born on May 14th, 1773 in , Halifax, North Carolina. Sarah's father was William Barrow and her mother was Olivia Ruffin. Her paternal grandfather was William Barrow; her maternal grandparents were Robert Ruffin and Anne Bennett. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, William, Bartholomew, Ruffin, Bennett, Ann and Mary. She was the third youngest of the eight children.-
